Default Backup Service

There are many topics about hacked accounts, and from what I read, ANET often confirms that it got hacked by gold sellers:
Quote:
Our records show that a member of a Real-Money Trading organization was able to access your account.
Yet, they never care about restoring characters and stuff!

I don't know about you, but I'm willing to pay for a backup service installed for your account.

They sell useless costumes in the NCStore, so they might as well offer something really useful.
It's just disgusting to loose all your stuff and characters because of people brute-forcing passwords.

BTW: No, my account wasn't hacked until now... I'm not a hardcore player anymore but I wouldn't want to loose 3.5k hours of gameplay.

So... useful or not?

Will NEVER happen.

You get a friend to "hack" your account and steal your stuff. You complain and get a.net to restore your stuff. Now, if the original stuff had been properly laundered, there are now 2 of everything you owned floating out in the market.

It's way to open to exploitation to create duping of rare items.

What if the service includes a ban for all accounts involved in the hack, including deletion of the items on them? I think they already ban accounts for unfair trades, so all accomplices are automatically out.

And even if they omit item recovery:
They should at least provide a character recovery service... . That doesn't harm the economy(I can be wrong, tell me if it's the case :P).

I' am all for it. Been hacked once myself started playing again and haven't had trouble since, but I lost thousands of hours of game play time, luckily for me I pvp more than anything. Also the other guy has a good point, but hopefully in GW2 they can revert accounts to how they previously were much like WoW does.

Ok so he takes my mini vizu and sells it right away...then his account gets banned....the vizu is still out there unless you ban the account that he traded it to, or delete the item...banning would be idiotic because well banning legit accounts because of who they trade with is RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed up.
Removing the item is bad because he looses his money....
if you give him back the money he spent it'd be ok...
but what if he already traded the vizu for a ded panda and zhed by the time he's tracked down...
then you have another person involved and it all goes downhill from there...

Edit: dont take my fake trades of vizus for ded pandas and zheds as good avice I have no clue as to the price of high end minis

This is incorrect.

Hackers have stolen account information from other websites and other games, and they are trying to see if the information they stole from other places will work in Guild Wars accounts. They've discovered that many people use the same account and password information from other games as they do in Guild Wars. This is how they have stolen Guild Wars players' accounts.

Well I'm glad I put the 'from what I read' in that sentence. I'm also glad I got that kind of reply.

I wasn't able to play for over 3 months (college), and when I launched Guild Wars yesterday I got that big red scary message. I came here to see what was going on and the first topic I did read was this one:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/accounts-hacked-t10407405.html
I also found other topics about this kind of hacks, but I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read.

I won't rest my case though.... what about the paid character recovery, just in case you get hacked anyway? No items, just the characters with their achievements. It's all about 1 TRIGGER in the database, and this could help some ignorant people who screwed things up using their password on another site.

What I think is funny the most is that in an MMO database, your items, characters and such are nothing but 1's and 0's..and extra small kb sized codes. Lmao

Have a nice Day.

I am not for a backup service. Better to solve the root of the problem, which is account insecurity.

And for the record, if you buy gold, you deserve to get your account stolen.

The problem is GoF, that would mean GW would have to backup everything all the time. Every time a character gets deleted, the game would have to store its appearance and stats JUST in case the account was stolen. How often would backups be created? How long would they be stored for? If I don't log on for 6 months, and then find out my account was hacked, will the back ups be gone. It would ridiculously over complicate things and take up a large amount of server space.

Honestly, if you just think this through logically, you will realize why this entire idea is unfeasible. I pointed out the bigger flaws. "End" filled in the gaps.
